My name is John Forester, I am twenty three years old and I'm studying to become a writer and journalist. My college English teacher in night school has helped me a lot and given me some books on how to learn to write. I've always been an avid reader of all kinds of literature and now Miss Brady----that's her name----told me that I should start practicing writing and that I should write about something I know. . .or some personal experience.

It's not easy to begin----not knowing what I should write about--with a blank piece of paper staring me in the face. I moped around for about a week, even talked about it with my best friend, Bob. He suggested I write about the visit to the circus last year, when we both had a lot of fun. But what is there to write about----if you're not actually a member of the circus and don't know the real ins and outs of their work. My wife Dorothy wasn't much help either. My friends said that if I wanted to write something worthwhile, I had to feel the urge to put something on paper, something that was close to my heart, something I believed in, or something that other people might want to read about...some unusual happening--some strange incident. . .something like
